Education
Nguuni Education Centre and children's library
In 2006, Haller and the Baobab Trust set up the Nguuni Education Centre, to provide a clean and safe place for disadvantaged youth to learn. Stocked with over 11,500 children’s books, its library has become an invaluable resource to the 30,000 children within its surroundings.
Situated in a nature sanctuary like a green lung surrounded by slums, the Education Centre also aims to teach children about the value of the environment. To this end, it hosts educational environmental workshops, a film club, a bird club, youth groups and more. Children from 28 schools come to the Education Centre regularly. It provides a safe, supervised alternative to life on the streets for the children of Mombasa.
Community Nursery Schools
Haller helps every community it supports to set up its own community nursery school. This ensures children are cared for and begin learning whilst their parents work on their farms. Parents can also request specific lessons, for instance in adult literacy. We also offer a porridge-feeding programme for children at community schools. This ensures that children get at least one meal a day, which is vital for their concentration.
Famer field training
Haller's farmer field training program allows us to tangibly demonstrate to communities the link between water, health, education and environment and is designed to enable farmers to become self sufficient. We provide practical-skills workshops to show farmers how to maximize food production in the hardest of conditions. Our training provides both general farming techniques as well as more specific advice on how to create and maintain integrated and sustainable agriculture and aquaculture systems. These workshops take place at our demonstration farm as well as in-situ at the newly constructed community dams, farms and fishponds.

Health Workshops
Our health workshops are a crucial element to the work we do. They provide people with knowledge on a series of health-related topics and give basic information on how to deal with illnesses such as HIV/Aids, diarrhea and malaria. They also give invaluable advice on safe water storage, family planning, nutrition, sanitation and first aid.

Haller Research
Dr Haller's work has inspired many young academics and scientists, resulting in a wealth of research that has developed from Dr. Haller's activities over the past 40 years. We have carried out research with scores of highly talented scientists, and our research library houses master's and doctoral and post-doc dissertations on subjects varying from crocodiles, fisheries, nitrogen fixing trees and agricultural techniques, natural pesticides, horticulture to animal husbandry and biogas. This is currently being digitalised and will be uploaded onto the internet for public dissemination and to help the work of other non-governmental organisations. Haller truly believes that development and progress can only be achieved through working together with other people and sharing our findings and knowledge.
Haller’s UK Schools Project - "Bringing Africa to the South East"
We work with schools in the South East in a dynamic educational programme “Bringing Africa to the South East” in a programme of assemblies, workshops and activities accompanied by props, information packs, pictures and games, about life for children in Africa. This has involved cross cultural activities and even an exchange visit.
