Farmer Field Training
Haller’s farmer field training began when a number of communities asked Dr. Rene Haller to explain why and how their land had become so infertile and unproductive. In response, Rene developed a purpose built demonstration farm to trial, test, and teach pioneering farming techniques that rural farmers could use to maximise their food production.
Haller now runs regular workshops at the demonstration farm. Our workshops are tailored to communities’ specific needs, and enable local farmers and fishermen to gain the knowledge and skills to grow enough food to eat, and even a surplus to sell. Participants are given tree saplings, seeds, and everything they need to start farming sustainably. Haller’s trained ‘community mobilisers’ provide on-site support to farmers within their communities, to help them implement what they have learnt.

Haller trains farmers to:
- Harvest and recycle rain water for irrigation
- Conserve top soil by terracing their land
- Diversify crops for a healthier diet and increased crop production
- Plant natural pesticides
- Use household waste to make compost
- Grow medicinal crops
- Dry food for preservation
- Farm fish for consumption and sale
- and much more!
Aquaculture
We teach farmers how to keep and farm fish. Based on Dr. Rene Haller's extensive research, the fish farms are built to optimise the growth rate of fish. One fish farm can have as many as 350 adult fish in it, which bring a whole suite of benefits:
Growing for Health
Not only do we help people grow more crops, but we also teach them about nutrition, and encourage them to eat a well balanced, varied diet. We encourage people to grow plants which have medicinal uses. Fruits, flowers, bark and sap can all be harvested sustainably and either used or sold. For instance, the bark of the moringa olifera can be used as an antiseptic, and it’s fruits and leaves are highly nutritious; Aloe vera is an anti bacterial, so can be used to treat skin wounds and a variety of ailments.
