We would like to introduce the newest member of our UK team, Camilla Slattery, Manager of Donor Partnerships – Corporate. Camilla joins us after spending the past 4 years fundraising for medical charities in the local area and prior to this, 10 years in the finance industry as a Senior Researcher.

Digging a dam by hand A clip of our newest community digging their rain-fed dam by hand. Typically 750 tonnes are removed by hand by community members who are building a sustainable rain-fed dam/water catchment. This will provide then with access to water, where previously they had to walk up to 4 hours to the nearest source of water. It also enables them to rehabilitate the surrounding land to grow food for sustenance and for sale. The community members dig the dam by hand, which gives them a sense of ownership and for which we pay them – for many this is the first time they have ever earned an income.

Did you know that Papaya and Pumpkin is happy to grow in drought conditions? We teach our farmers to grow these and other drought resistant crops to help ensure they have food security throughout the year.

Kevin Sloan, Haller’s New Director

Farmer of the Year 2012!!

One of new community leaders, Patricia (pictured here with her husband) was nominated by the Ministry of Agriculture as Farmer of the Year for the Kisuani District. Patricia was chosen from a population of 360,000, many of which are smallholder farmers.
