The Haller Foundation (known as Haller) was established as a UK-registered charity in 2004 by Louise Piper and Julia Hailes, MBE.  Julia met Dr. Rene Haller in the 1990's when they were both awarded a UN Global 500 Award for their outstanding contribution to the environment (Rene's award was primarily due to his work in regenerating limestone quarries into a sustainable eco-system, now known as the Haller Park).  Louise and Julia wanted to ensure that his model for sustainable landscape regeneration and food security was continued and replicated elsewhere in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Haller continued to support the farmer training initiatives but also expanded the model to include water security, health, educational and income generating initiatives to help rural communites to be sustainable.   Initially Haller funded projects which were implemented and managed by The Baobab Trust, an NGO which was established in 1991 by Dr. Haller.  In 2009, Haller registered its own NGO in Kenya to help support its expansion beyond Mombasa, however it still works closely alongside The Baobab Trust.  Dr. Haller is the Executive Director of both the NGOs.
