Supporting Women Farmers

Agnes - A Champion Haller Farmer

Agnes, a dedicated farmer and one of Haller’s shining examples of resilience and innovation, has transformed her livelihood with support from Haller’s programs. Through targeted training and infrastructure development, Agnes has significantly improved her farming practices, enabling her to achieve sustainable success.

  • A New Beginning with Haller’s Support

Agnes’ journey with Haller began with the construction of her homestead. Through the Guernsey Roof Guttering Program, her home was equipped with a roof that now facilitates efficient rainwater harvesting, a crucial resource for her farming and household needs.

  • Training at the Haller Demonstration Farm

Eager to learn, Agnes participated in training sessions at the Haller demonstration farm. These sessions equipped her with the knowledge and skills to manage her poultry farm effectively and diversify her farming activities.

  • Transforming Poultry Farming

Agnes transitioned from free-range poultry farming to a more structured approach by building a dedicated poultry hut. This change was driven by her understanding of the challenges associated with free-range farming, including the high risk of disease among chickens.

With limited initial resources, Agnes began with just nine chicks purchased from a neighbouring farmer. To address disease risks, she implemented best practices in disease management learned from her Haller training. As her chickens mature and begin laying eggs, Agnes plans to introduce laying boxes to enhance productivity further.

  • Overcoming Challenges and Planning for the Future

Agnes faced financial and logistical challenges in expanding her poultry venture. She struggled to acquire more chicks until she had completed building a secure poultry house. Looking ahead, she plans to construct a fence around the poultry hut to provide additional security and maintain the health of her flock.

  • Embracing Diversification: Kitchen Gardening

In addition to poultry farming, Agnes has embraced kitchen gardening, utilising sustainable practices to grow vegetables for her family’s consumption and potential sale in local markets. This diversification has added another layer of resilience to her farming activities.

  • Record-Keeping for Better Management

To manage her activities and monitor progress, Agnes received a record-keeping book from Haller. This tool has helped her track stock, plan her operations, and maintain financial records, ensuring a clear overview of her growing enterprise.

A Role Model for Others

Agnes’ success story exemplifies how training, infrastructure support, and access to essential tools can empower farmers to overcome challenges and build sustainable livelihoods. As a champion Haller Farmer, Agnes inspires her community with her determination, resourcefulness, and commitment to continuous improvement.

Through stories like Agnes’, Haller reaffirms its mission to equip smallholder farmers with the skills and resources needed to thrive in their environments.
