The Nguuni Education Centre, Kenya’s first free children’s library, continues to serve thousands of disadvantaged students, driving literacy and engagement.

Over 20 years, the challenges facing the smallholder communities Haller was set up to serve have shifted and evolved. But our approach remains rooted in a mission to bring together ecology and economy.

Bees play a critical role in the global food chain, pollinating around three-quarters of the world’s flowering plants which produce 90% of the world’s food. The FAO has estimated that one out of every three bites of food we eat depends on bee pollination.

Dr Rene Haller is featured in ‘102 Holes in the Ground’, a new book providing case studies of repurposing mine sites and rejuvenating mining communities by rebuilding ecological integrity and enhancing livelihoods.

As part of our new app launch, we wanted to take some time to reflect with our team in Kenya on the impact of the app to date, and why continued innovation is so important.

Land stewardship is “the most precious resource to ensure the stability and prosperity of billions of people around the world.” Sustainable land management has the power to address today’s global challenges and create a blueprint to a better future on land for all generations.

Smallholder farmers play an increasingly important role in food safety. 80% of food in developing regions is grown by smallholders, and with food demand expected to grow by more than 70% by 2050, there is a clear need to install sustainable food systems that work for these communities.

Dr Haller’s methodology extends throughout all of the work the Haller Foundation carries out today. Here we explore just a few of the ways we’re currently working to restore degraded landscapes and protect the environment.

Through white labelling, the technology underpinning the Haller Farmer’s app’s functions can be adopted by other charities around the world, but the information on the app can be adapted to reflect the needs of smallholder farmers in that region.

Despite their outsized importance in the global food system, female farmers face a growing number of challenges. Not only do these obstacles negatively impact individual female smallholders, they fundamentally undermine global efforts to address hunger and poverty.

Studies have demonstrated the increased penetration of mobile technology across Africa. But to build a more up to date picture, specifically focused on the use of technology in agriculture, Felix Young set out to survey smallholder farmers across 15 African countries.

In 2023, Haller joined forces with long-time donor the Eagle Foundation to channel efforts into two key projects: installing sanitation in the community-owned Munnawar primary school, and expanding the capacity of the Mtopanga demonstration farm.

In December 2023, the Haller team in Kenya conducted farmer training sessions in partnership with the Osiligi Charity Projects. An exciting step in our mission to scale knowledge of regenerative farming in Kenya and beyond.
