Strengthening Rural Healthcare: Restoring Trust and Saving Lives in Southern Kenya

In rural Kenya, access to quality healthcare can mean the difference between life and death. For communities in Kamungi Conservancy, limited equipment and staffing once placed significant strain on local health services.

With funding from Fondation Eagle, Haller Foundation and partners have worked to strengthen two key dispensaries — Ngiluni and Nthunguni — serving over 8,000 people.

From limited capacity to life-saving care

Prior to the intervention, both facilities faced critical shortages in essential medical equipment. This restricted their ability to provide safe maternal care, manage emergencies, and deliver reliable primary healthcare.

Today, both dispensaries are fully equipped with essential medical tools, enabling safer, more effective care.

Within just three months of implementation:

  • Over 4,000 patient interactions were recorded

  • Maternal health services were restored

  • Ngiluni dispensary recorded its first delivery in three years

  • Referral systems were strengthened, ensuring safer outcomes

Rebuilding trust in local healthcare

One of the most significant outcomes has been the restoration of community confidence.

Previously, many women bypassed local facilities due to lack of equipment. Now, more patients are choosing to seek care closer to home — improving early intervention and reducing risk.

This project goes beyond equipment delivery. It is strengthening the entire local healthcare system through:

  • Integration into County Government health services

  • Planned training of Community Health Promoters

  • Strengthened referral pathways

  • Ongoing monitoring and supervision

The upgrade of Nthunguni to a Level 3 facility further reflects the lasting institutional impact of this work.

Building sustainable healthcare access

With continued investment in training, staffing, and monitoring, the foundations are now in place for long-term, sustainable healthcare improvements.

This project demonstrates the power of partnership: bringing together donors, local government, and communities to create meaningful, lasting change.
