Transforming Lives Through Water: Building Climate Resilience in Coastal Kenya
Access to clean, reliable water is fundamental to health, dignity, and opportunity. Yet for many rural communities in coastal Kenya, this basic necessity remains out of reach.
With the support of The Peter Stebbings Memorial Charity, Haller Foundation has delivered a targeted water capture initiative in Muungano kwa Mwalue, Kisauni District, a community facing increasing pressure from water scarcity, erratic rainfall, and climate change.
Over a six-month period, the project installed rainwater harvesting systems across four vulnerable household clusters, directly benefiting 122 people, including 70 children.
A simple solution with transformative impact
Each cluster received a 3,000-litre water tank, alongside roof guttering and structural adjustments to maximise rainwater capture. While simple in design, the impact has been profound.
Families who once walked up to five hours a day to collect water now have a reliable source at home.
This has resulted in:
Improved hygiene and reduced waterborne disease
A decrease in malnutrition, supported by kitchen gardening
Significant time savings, particularly for women and girls
Reduced household spending on water
Greater resilience during dry periods
Strengthening community resilience
The intervention was designed not only to meet immediate needs but to build long-term resilience. Alongside installation, households received training in:
Safe water handling
Hygiene practices
Tank maintenance
Fair and sustainable water sharing
Community ownership has been central to the project’s success. Each tank is managed collectively, strengthening both accountability and social cohesion.
Looking ahead
While the programme has delivered strong results, demand continues to grow. Larger storage capacity and expanded reach are key priorities for future phases, as more families seek access to reliable water.
This project demonstrates how practical, community-led solutions can deliver lasting change. Improving health, restoring dignity, and enabling families to build more secure futures in the face of climate uncertainty.
